ALARMING INCREASES
NUMBER OF ADMISSIONS TO MENTAL HOSCITALS. / .EFFECT OF DEPRESSION. It is reliably understood, according to enquiries made by the "Post," that a new and significant sidelight upon the effects of the depression is a 75 per cent. increase in the number of admissions to mental hospitals during the past two years. A great percentage of these distressing cases can be directly attributed to the stringencies of the present time. For the year ending March, 1929, the number of admissions to. mental hospitals was 800, but for the year ending March, 1931, it is understood that the figures will be over 1400. It is stated that a great proportion of these new admissions are women whose mental condition has been deranged as a result of the difficulties with which they have been faced in endeavouring to keep homes together and maintain families during the present difficult period. This' alarming increase of 75 per cent. ine>a brief period of two years may be taken as a most telling commentary upon the harassing effects which the depression has engendered.
