UREWERA COUNTY ROAD VIA LAKE WAIKAREMOANA.
The condition of the newly-con-structed scenic route through the Urewera Country and via Laks Waikaremoana was reeently inspected by the touring manager of the A.A.A, on his visit to the Gisborne and Hawke's Bay territory. The damage which oecurred some 20 miles , north of Wairoa, has now been cleared, and it will only he on rare occasions that the river will rise sufficiently t'o. fiood the road. A detour is available ,at these times, so that local road. users should not he unduly inconvenienced. The Public Works Departihent is steadily carrying out maintenance work with a small grant that has been made available, and at the time of inspection acCess was. available from the Lake House as f ar as the Mokau Falls. On otheir portions of the road slips occurred, and in numerous places on the Huirau . Range fallen trees block the road. It will take some time before the maintenancei work which is at present in hand can overtake the damage which has been done. The matter of bringing this road hack into reasonable condition will ' be discussed at the next j council meeting of the A.A.A., and ; it is hoped that the ronte will be reopened for next summer. On the northern end of the Urewera, numerous improvements ar'e heing carried out. Corners are being cut hack, eurves widened, and the road is generally heing made much safer. T'his work is not entirely for tourist traffic, as there is a large amount of timber being carried over Jbhe road, and with increased settlement there is now a much bigger volume of traffic than in previous years.
