GUP TOURNAMENTS H. B. LUSK DEFEAT GOSS IN IIARD FOUGH.T CONTEST. ' BRINSDEN'S ,EASY VICTORIES. Play in the Rotorua Golf Club's Amateur Open Championship and i-n th-e Thermal Cup reached interesting stages yesterday. In the morning, H. B. Lusk met J. Goss in the third round of the open event, and the con^ test, witnessed by about 200 followers, was exciting to a degree. Lusk was one up at the turn and both were on the green for three at the tenth, whare Lusk, with a forty- * foot putt, sat rm the iip of the hole,to put a perfect stymie on to his opponent. Goss was only a foot away and it was considered by practically everyone to be an impossible shot. Goss, however, took his niblick, and after a mom'ent' practice at the edge of the green, tackled h*is difficult fcask. He did it! He neatly laffed his pill into the cup, scarcely disturbing the offending ball, to - halve the hole amid excited applause from the gallery. , - Both were playing dea.dl'y accurate games and concluded the eighteentb • hole all square. From here on they halved another four holes, Goss making a good i'ecovery at the 22nd, where he had to play an extremely hard downhill shot from the steep side of a mou'nd. Lusk concluded the match at the 23rd by sinking for a birdie. Lusk played against G. Tallis in the semi-finals and held a lead of one or two all the way. After being dormie three he lost the next two to take the ■ match hy halving the eighteenth. On the other side of the championship draw, G. Brinsd'en had a runaway victory over C. J. Johnson in the third - round, and repeated his performance in the semi-final hy defeating F. C. Hutchison by six and four. To-morrow, Lusk meets Brinsden in a two-round eontest for the final. All th-e games in the third round and the semi-finals for the Thermal Cup were lairly evenly contested, there being no outstanding seores. Following are- the results of yester- ■ day's play: CHAMPIONSHIP CUP. THIRD ROUND. G. Brinsden beat C. J. Johnson, 6 and 4. F. C. Hutchison beat C. Kusabs, 3 and 2. G. Tallis beat W. Abbott, one up H. B. Lusk beat J. Goss, one up at 23-rd. SEMI-FINAL. G. Brinsden beat F. C. Hutchison, 6 and 4. H. B. Lusk beat G Tallis, one up. THERMAL CUP. THIRD ROUND. G. S. Fry beat J. Lusk, one up. * D. And. rson beat B. Peacock, 4 a-nd 2 Warwick- Vvilson beat G. B. Ward, two up. A. Craig beat R. S Baker, 3 and, 1. SEMI-FINAL. D. Anderson beat G. S. Fry, one up. A. Craig beat Warwick-Wilson, 3 and 2. OTHER MATCHES. In a medal foursome, on handieap, ilayed y-Ssterday morning, H. C. Wells and S. E. Carr proved the winners with a score of 76 — 6 — 70. The bogey pairs eompetition in the afternoon was won by R. C. Smith and H. C. Wells, with the excellent combined core of 10 up on ,the Colonel.
