To cool a jelly or blanc mange quickly, place the vessel that contains it in cold water to which a little salt has been added. The following is a sure way of moving the most obs'tinate bottle stopper. By means of a feather apply a drop or two of salad oil just where the stopper joins the neck of the bottle. Then put the bottle at a little distance from the fire, where it will become slightly warmed, but not hot. The oil rapidly works down in between the stopper and the neck, and by giving the whole thing a slight tap the stopper will come out. Turpentine will thin paint, cleanse glazed tiles, porcelain baths and sinks. If it is applied with a stiff brush it will keep the gas-cooker clean outside.
