SOLDIERS’ SICKNESS.
TWO DEATHS REPORTED. ANOTHER SUSPECTED CASE OF OEREBRU-SPINAL MENINGITIS.
Surgeon - General Henderson, Director-General of Medical Services, informed a Times reporter yesterday that the pneumonia patient whose case had been reported as serious at the Greytown Hospital, died late on Sunday night, the immediate cause of death being heart failure. Deceased was a member of D Company, 19th Reinforcements. ' '
The pneumonia patient who was being treated at the Racecourse Hospital at Trentham, died late on Saturday night from double pneumonia following measles. Deceased was a member of C Company 18th Reinforcements. General Henderson said that a further case was under observation for suspected cerebro-spinal meningitis. The patient had been suffering from measles and was under treatment for eleven davs when ho showed signs of developing cerebrospinal meningitis. The disease is in its earlier stages—if it proves to exist as is suspected—and every precaution and care is being exercised. Of the other five cases of cerebro - spinal meningitis, it is doubtful it two of the number are true forms of the disease, and both are verjf much better. Two of the remaining cases are mucn better, and the fifth shows distinct improvement. Yesterday General Henderson, in company with Cclonel Yalintine, paid a visit of inspection to Trentham Camp. Every hutment was subjected to a personal inspection and everything waa. found to be satisfactory. Each hutment has been whitewashed, and despite the heavy rain that has fallen lately the ground was found to be dry. “Everything is in readiness for the reception of the ■ 17th Reinforcements, who will enter a sweet and clean camp,” stated General Henderson.
The.latest reports from Peatherston and Tauherenikan showed that the general health of the troops was satisfactory. The cerehro - spinal meningitis case was still improving.
