The Taihape and district members of the 20th Reinforcements were tendered a farewell by the Patriotic Committee on Saturday evening, the function taking place in the Town Hall The evening was spent chiefly in dancing, there being a large attendance despite the very rough weather. The opportunity was taken during the evening nyMessrs Arrowsmith and Bennett, and the Rev. Mr Stent, of addressing the gathering, explaining the conditions of the War Loan, and exhorting all to do something towards making the loan a success, Each of the speakers concluded by wishing the boys every success as soldiers, and an early and safe return. The men, numbering 21, left under Sergt.-Major Tuckey by the first express on Monday for Palmerston

The Taihape Borough Council’s estimated receipts for the year 191617 are as follows:—Government subsidy £190; outstanding rates £249 18s Id; billiard rooms £8 8s; carriers £SO; miscellaneous £5; dox tax £l2; rents of reserves £594; royalty on metal £65; Town Hall bookings £150; general rate £1505 7s 6d ; lighting rate £iso 11s8d; water rate £540; slabe oi water £150; miscellaneous £80; accounts owing, water and electric £375; rents owing £2OO. The expenditure, which is estimated at £2503 Is 9d, is made up as tollows:—Mayor’s honorarium £SO, management £32o'; general wages, carting etc,, roads and streets £900; drainage £4O; Hospital and Charitable Aid Board levy £124 16s 9d ; printing and advertising £75; office requisites and expenses £SO; fire prevention £6O; collection dog tax and collars £l2 ; town clock £7 10s; insurance, fire and accident, £4O; interest on overdraft and Bank charges £175; temporary loans interest - £10; interest on Town Hall loan £235 waterworks £250; Band, subsidy, £3O; Town HaU maintenance £6O; Town Hall insurance £73 15s; miscellaneous £SO. Tnese figures refer to the General Account only, and the estimated receipts show an excess of £1997 3s (3d over the estimated expenditure.
