GENERAL SMUTS’ ADVANCE. VANDERVENTER MOVING RAPIDLY FORWARD. RoceivedJAng. 18, 10.30 a.m, London, Aug. 17. General Smuts, advancing on the loth from the Nguru Mountains, overcame slight opposition and reached the junction of the princixial tracks to Mrogoro and Kilossa. Our columns are now clear of the difficult hilly country and only twenty five miles of open steppe separate us from the Central Railway. Colonel Vanderventer, further westward, occupied Mpapua, and is moving towards Kilossa. Our Naval Brigade, on the 15th, occupied an important military caostal station at .Bagamojo thirty six miles northward of Dar es Salaam CYCLONE IN JAMAICA. GREAT DAMAGE SUSTAINED. Kingston, Aug. 17. A cyclone swept over Southern Jamaica. It is believed the northern end escaped. The banana crops principally suffered. Kingston was cut off from the outside world. Some deaths occuned. AUSTRALIAN CASUALTIES. Sydney Aug. 17. List 194 contains the names of the following New Zealanders'':— Wonnded—Corpl. J. Moore,. Privtate J. McGregor. Wounded and dangerously ill— Sergt. D. Sanson. Returned to duty—Lance Corpl. L G. H. Ward, Privtae W. Kennedy. List 195 contains the names of the following New Zealanders:— Died of wounds—Sergt. A. Barnard. , W'oundSd—Privates A. F. Skellern and H. Symonds. Progressing favourably—Private F. Foibrs. Returned to duty—Private S. C. F. Wiffin.
