Lord Northcliffe, writing from Gorizia, emphasises the difficulties the Italinas had to encounter. He says Italian reserves are plentiful hat the strength of the Austrian defensive organisation was tinmistakeable. Pneumatic driJla and dynamite were needed to make an impression on the Carso’s rocky.soil. The Austrian front line was blasted out of the recks. Sniper’s lookouts were armoured with iron plates, cemented into the rocks. Water was pumped up and food and munitions were abundant. The prisoners are raw, lusty men, and the officers are a good imitation of the square-headed, heel-clicking Prussians. HEBCE AUSTRO-ITALIAH BATTLE RAGING. AUSTRIANS EVACUATING TOLMliifl JAIL OF THE TOWN IMMINENT. Rome, August 13. A fierce battle is raging in the Piava sector. The Italians are steadily advancing. The Austrians have commenced to evacuate Tolmino and its fall is imminent. It is reported that the Italians have captured the outer suburbs of Tolmino.
