NEXT ASSAULT NEARLY DUE. ALLIES RAINING METAL. PERTURBATION AFFECTS GERMANS. Paris, Aug. 9. Allied artillery had marie an exceptionally severe bombardment for forty-eight hours on a 45 kilometre front, from Tluepval to the outskirts of Roye. The first and second, and even the third German lines have been deluged with metal. Many German batteries have been knocked out. Jit has been shown that the Allies have consolidated their recent gains and are ready for the nest fo’rward sweep. The Germans are manifestly greatly perturbed at the propect of a ienewal of the offensive. Their aviators are endeavouring locate our concentrations and the* region of the probable attack. The Allies’ activity on the Somme mentioned in the latest communique is regarded as a groat local movement, preluding a more serious move.
