Lords Cromer and Ourzon and Lord James of Hereford delivered vigorous speeches at the Men’s League, opposing women’s suffrage. Sir Edward Clark, the Dean of Canterbury, Sir West Ridgeway, and Admiral Fremantle were present. Lord Curzon declared that the bulk of married women did not favor women’s suffrage. The wives of the workers were indifferent or hostile, and it was impossible to enfranchise propertied women and refuse the vote to wives.
