THE TARIFF MANIA.
United Press Association.—By Bleo terio Telegraph.—Copyright. Melbourne, May 2. A Trades Hall Council deputation asked the Minister of Customs to impose an export duty on wheat, meat and butter, so as to prevent their exportation and increased prices. It was urged that speculators should be stopped from forcing up prices as the people reaped no benefits from bounteous seasons; the speculators alone benefited. The Minister, in reply, said he considered that the Government should keep sufficient products of the country to prevent raising the prices and promised to submit the matter to Cabinet. If investigations showed the producer was not getting a fair share and the consumer paying too much, it might help the Government to solve a knotty problem.
