Laver, Wbitty, Oaxkeek, Hopkins and McAilster were omitted from the Australian team. The weather was dull but the wicket good. The attendance was moderate. Northampton won the toss and elected to bat, but made a poor start, the first two wickets being down for 18, and four for 58. Scores ; NORTHAMPTON.—First Innings. At the luncheon interval the score stood at 5 for 75. Wells was 80 minutes at the wickets, and made a good display of vigorous driving and puling. He finally returned a hot one to Armstrong, which the bcwler held. A smart ’return by Hansford was responsible for East’s dismissal. Thompson played a sound and steady game. He batted 140 minutes, and gave a chance to Garter at the wickets off O’Connor whoa ha had made 4. The seventh wicket fell at 142, the eighth at 168, and the ninth at 181.
