THE TIMBER COMMISSION.

Per Press Association

Auckland, May 8,

Giving evidence before the Timber Commission, Mr George A. Pearce, chairman of South Auckland Sawmillers’ Association, said that millers complained that the Lauds’ Department treated them rather as sharpers than as business men. Royalties were quite unreasonable and he complained of harassing delays to give access to hush lauds. The timber on good laud ought to be cut and the laud settled. Railway charges on timber were exorbitant, and the Department’s attitude towards the industry was hostile. The import duty on logs should be greatly increased. All waste 1 lands should be planted with fast-growing trees.
