The girl Johnston, missing from Thames, was found in the Ranaranga river this morning. Her skirts were found near the water and there is no doubt it was a case of suicide. A three-year-old boy, the eon of J. G. McKay, of Gore, picked up some pollard rabbit poisoning yesterday afternoon, and, mistaking it for oat some ana died at S “o’clock this morning. ( Captain Seaton, who is walking round the world.’and has set ont to do 45,000 miles in six years, is at present in Martou and intends, if arrangements can be made, to give a lecture on Mondayn ight on his experiences. Annie Nicholson, charged to-day at Auckland Police Court on four counts with perjury arising Irons statements made by her in a recent bankruptcy proceedings, pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed .in one surety of £lO. The wife of Henry Jeffries, farmer, near Berwick, committed suicide yesterday.by banging herself at 'the foot of the bedstead. Deceased had been in ill-health and confined to bed. Three years ago she made a similar attempt which nearly succeeded. A case to be beard at next sitting of the District Court at- Masterton is that of H. Pithie v. Herbert, exMay or of Eketahuna, and the Express newspaper, a claim against defendants for £IOO damages jointly and severalty, for alleged defamatory words concerning plaintiff in his capacity as drain contractor, alleged to have been spoken byfthe defendant Herbert and published in the defendant newspaper. Surgeon-General Skerman. senior medical officer of the New Zealand Forces, has resigned. He is the only volunteer officer of the rank in the Dominion. Born in England in 1855, Dr. Skorman was appointed surgeon to the Marton Royal Rifles (volunteers) in 1879, captain from 1881 to 1898, becoming surgeonoaptain in the New Zealand Medical Corps in the latter year. He was promoted surgeon-major three years later. He was staff medical officer to the Sixth New Zealand Mounted Rifles, and saw service in South Africa, for which he holds the Queen’s medal.
