Bardsley and Carter an excellent batting display. The latter obtained 50 in an equal number of minutes by beautiful cutting and delightful cricket. Bardsley obtained 4.5 in 57 minutes. Carter played a capital innings, doing some fine-cutting. The second wicket fell for 133. The next three wickets fell rapidly. Bardsley batted 95minutes. After Ransford’s dismissal the fifth wicket being down for *145, a good partnership commenced between Trumpet and Armstrong. Both commenced carefully, with small bits, and occasional footers. Trumpet gave a hard chance at 14 to Jones’ left band at mid-off oS Hallam. At the Innoh interval the second century was up for 150 minutes’ play. The batting was brilliant, eleven resulting from one over of Hardstaff. Trumpet’s half century was made Inside 70 minutes. Shortly after resuming Trumpet lost his wicket in trying to pull Hallam. His innings was brilliant, after a quiet start, and occupied UO'minutes. He made 12 fours. Arrrist'ong made 55 in 55 minutes, witboot a mistake. The sixth wicket fell at 387. Armstrong became freer but Cotter gave a chance when at seven. Indulging in hard hitting he sent up a tremendous skyer, which missed the wicket keeper Oates. Armstrong’s century appeared for 170 minutes’ play. It was a faultless innings, and he was cheered. He made a fiver, four of which was from an overthrow, and ten fours.
