HIGH COMMISSIONER’S RE- : PORT. Per Press Association. ■Wellington, May 3. Following is the High Commissioner’a cable dated London, May Ist: The mutton market remains very depressed. Prices slightly declined for all grades and I believe there is some foundation for it. North Island heavy weights have sold at ewes 3d per lb (cable slightly mutilated). , „ ■, The lamb market is very dull and supply excessive, Stock is accumulating, - and there is very little prospect of an advance in the market for either mutton or lamb. The beef market is steady and there is a better demand, but the supply meets the demand. Hinds 3%d, fores 3%d. The butter market is quiet, but firm. There is better demand especially for best quality. Choicest New Zealand 100 s per owt., Danish 108 s, Australian 98s, Argentine 98s, Siberian 965. .' . , The cheese market is steady. There is not much demand but prices are firm. White 60s 6d, coloured 63s 6d The hemp market is quiet. Small business is doing, and no immediate change is expected. Reports indicate that heavy shipments of hemp are expected from£ Manila. Good fair New Zealand is quoted on spot at £33 5s per ton, fair grade £22, fair current Manila on spot £3l AOs, May-July shipments New Zealand good fair i£23, “fair grade £3l 10s, and fair onrrent Manila £3l ss. The Manila output'.is 28.00 C bales. The cocksfoot market is quiet, but steady. The demand is improving, but prices are unchanged at 80s. The wheat market ia quiet, but holders are firm. There ;is less demand and buyers are holding back. New Zealand long-berried wheat on spot ex granary, per c quarter of 496ib5,, 44s 6d; New Zealand short berried wheat on spot ex granary, per quarter of 4961b5, 435. The oats market is firm, with more inquiry. New Zealand oats, short spatrowbilis, ex granary, per quarter of 884Ibs, 265; New Zealand oats, Danish, ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 8301b5., 21s. The beans market is firm, with a hardening tendency. The supply will fall short k 'of demand. New Zealand beaus f.a.q. old crop, peb 5041 bs, 355. The supply of peas is running abort, and the market is firmer. New Zealand partridge peas, per 504ibs, 46s 6d. , . The wool market ia firm and prices continue to advance. Bradford cops are quoted as follows: 36’s (low crossbreds) ll%d, 40 ’ s ( low cross ' breda) Is o%d, 44’s (medium crossbreds) Is l%d, 50’s (half bred s) ls6d, 50’s (qnarterbreds) la 9d, 60’s (merinos) 2s 2d.
STOCK REPORT. Messrs Freeman R. Jackson & Co., report:—On the 28th nit.,- at our Wanganui sale, £we yarded 600 head of cattle, 1500 sheep, and 50; pigs. The attendance was good, and bidding brisk throughout. All the cattle yarded sold with the exception *of a couple of pens of bullocks and a few odd lots, at satisfactory prices. The Hereford weaner heifers bred by Mr Ourrie made £2 sa. A good demand for sheep, and all sold. Wethers and good 'ambs in better demand. ' Pigs sold well. Quotations: —Fat cows £4 7a, £4 11s, to £4l 6s 4 year bullocks £4 17s 6d, 3 to 3)4 year steers £4 7s 6d, spayed cows ana heifers £2 19s 6d, fresh cows £3 9s fid to £2 13?, 18 months to 3 year haifers 38s to 355, store cows 30a to £3,- 15 to 18 menths steers £2 7s to £2 Bi, Hereford weauers £3 '6s, springing cows £3 10S to £3 Is, weaners 13s to 15s, mixed young cattle 365, vealers 9s, 13a, 14a to 15a, good fat lambs 0s 6d, good iambs 7s to 7s 6d, medium do. 4a 7d, 5s 7d, 5s lOd to 6a, small 2s to 3a, 2 tooth wethers 8s Cd, mixed age wethers 9s 4d to 9a 6d, fat wethers 10s lOd, empty ewes 7s to 7s Id, medium do. 5a 2d, others 2s 7d to 4s, .ewes and lambs 7s 6d.
