f? John McLean, head of the contracting firm of McLean and Sons, died at Auckland last night, aged 84. The Marine Department was advisefl to-day that the wife of the lighthouse-keeper at Stephen Island is suffering from scarlatina, and that some of the children are sickening for it. Dr. Pollen, port health, officer, and a trained nurse have been sent to the Island. Michael Moynihan, publican of Shannon, "was charged at Palmerston S M. Court to-day with four alleged breaches of the Licensing Act by issuing small cards at the recent licensing election, containing Instructions how to vote. The case was the first heard in New Zealand, and was laid under sub-sections A and B, section 15 7of the Legislature Act. The police prosecuted, and he facts were admitted by the defence. Counsel addressed the Court on the legal position. Decision was reserved. The shooting season was opened under favourable conditions, both as regards weather and quantity of game. Good bags of ducks were obtained on Saturday, and other game were reported to be more numerous than in former years; quail being particularly plentiful. |Next year being a close season for all game, sportsmen are availing themselves of the present opportunity of getting as much shooting as possible. Aa showing the interest taken in the opening of the shooting season. Mr Avery, of Mar ton, reportshaving had exceptional sales of ammunition and sporting goods, his sales of cartridges alone averaging 1000 per day. The quality is highly spoken of, and this may he accounted for by the fact that Mr Averv’a supplies are just direct from the manufacturer and only chilled shot isused.
The result of the competitions for table decorations at Mazton Flower Show were ,as follows:—First day: No. 4 table, first prize, Ruth Knigge, 114 votes; No. 1 table, 2nd prize, Mrs Jas. Russell, 108 votes ;*Na it table, Brd prize, Mrs T. L. Williams, 63 votes. Second day: No. 3 table, first prize, Miss Glasgow, 100 votes; No. 1 table, 2nd prize, Mr J. Meyer. 69 votes; No. 3 table, third prize. Miss Tickle. 48 votes. The oommitae is quite satisfied with the financial results of the show which are better than those attained last year.
