MARTON MAYORAL ELECTION.
SIR, —A statement is being circulated in Marton to the effect that Mr Beckett was Major of Marton at the time that a considerable shortage of funds occurred through the action of a late official. 1 was in the Council at the time, but as is well known 1 was boycotted by the rest of the members, and had to play a lone hand ; I was on none of the sub-com-mittees, and had no means of knowing much that I had a right to know. But I do know this, that Mr Beckett was not in the Council at the time the funds disappeared, and was not responsible in the slightest degree, and I feel it a duty to expose such unfair and false statements being circulated by his opponents,-—I am, etc.,
