UNPROFITABLE RAILWAYS.
Press Association. Dunedin, April 15. Sir Joseph Ward in a communication to the Dnnedin Star, says the decision to stop the RoxburghLawrence line pending Parliament reviewing 'the-position is unalterable. The Otago Central last year resnlted in the abnormally low results of six shillings per ceit, a deficiency on the 3 per cent, basis of £34,558, and it is estimated the Roxburgh line would prove nearly as disastrous. The suggestion that Southland influences have been responsible for Government’s action is baseless and without warrant, while the wretched suggestions that it was done to finish the district beoanse it is staunch Opposition is almost too contemptible to be considered in a matter of such vital importance.
