Per Press Association, Auckland, March 9. Speaking at the 1 Fire Brigades’ Conference, Oapt. Hugo, Government Fire Inspector, referred to the extraordinary prevalence of fires in New Zealand. In Wellington with a population of 60,000 therejjwere 189 fires in the twelve months ended March last. According to old world statistics a city of 300,000 people • would have no more fires, while in a European town of 60,000 under 38 fires would be expected. Here was somtehing wrong. He atributed the excess of fires in the Dominion not so much to incendiarism as to carelessness ingendered by the know- . lodge that fires would not mean a loss. He strongly commented upon over insurance.
