HEMP AND TOW EXPORTS.
HEAVY FALLING-OFF. Per Press Association. / Wellington, March 8. Returns compiled by the Chief Fibre Expert, Mr Fulton, of the hemp and tow exported during the month of February show a considerable falling-off compared with the corresponding period of 1908, although there was an increase for February over January, due mainly to the good weather conditions. The untput graded for last month amounted to 8788 bales, or 5040 bales lees than for February, 1908. The twelve months ending February, 1909, showed a falling-off of the product exported of 63,775 bales, the figures being:—Year ended February, 1909, 78,573 bales; year ended February, 1908, 142,348 bales. With regard to tow, which was graded lor the first time last month, 1603 bales passed through the graders’ hands. Of this 47 were No. 1, 455 N 0.2 and 1068 No. 3, while 88 were condemned. The Wellintgon shipments lof hemp amounted to 8708 bales for the month, compared with 5096 bales for the same month last year. Wellington also shipped 665 bales of tow, of which 169 were No. 2 grade and [479 No. 3 grade, while seven bales were condemned.
