ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Per Press Association. Christchurch, March 0. The body of a newly born infant was found in the river near the Barbadoes’Street Cemetery this afternoon. It that some boys were playing ou the river bank and had a dog with them. - The dog was going into , the water after sticks and when he returned on one occasion he brought the body with him. The body appears as though it had been in the water for some time. Ashburton, March 7. The body of a man, decomposed beyond recognition, was discovered partially immersed in a pool of dead water under willow trees on the south bank of the Ashburton river, a mile from town this morning. The man had evidently bgen dead for two months and it is' thought that the remains have been washed down the river to where fyund by the heavy flood which occurred at the end of January. The police are unaware of any man being missing in Ashburton county, and, there was nothing to lead to identification. An inquest will be held. Napier, March 7. A boy of eight years, named Maurice Edward Hughes, was drowned in the surf near the southern end of the Marine Parade on|Stnrday afternoon. There was a heavy sea and the boy was caught by the backwash^ A negro uamd Martin Pellcr, employed as cook ou the Hon. J. B. Ormond’s Karama station, was so badly burnt through the place in which he slept catching fire on Saturday night, that he died while being taken to Hastings. The building was not much damaged. It is supposed that Pellor accidentally set fire to the place on retiring. Dunedin, March 7. A drowning accident occurred at Tomahawk yesterday, the victim being Alfcx. Maxwell, aged 23 years-, son of Henry Maxwell, registrar of electors. Deceased and a brother, aged 21 years, went for a bathe ami almost immediately afterwards the deceased was seen a considerable distance cut in the surf. He suddenly disappeared, and was seen no more. Deceased was a good swimmer. The body has not been recovered.
