OROUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Council was held ou Saturday. Present—Ors. J. K, Vincent (in chair.', Thos. Rowling, H. Redmauyue, H. Burrell and W. G. Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE. From Woodville Borough Council, asking if it was the intention to have a ceremonial opening of the Gosge bridge.—Thera .will ao"doobt be one but disonasioo of details was held over. From Q. F. Robinson, Government engineer, stating he had sketched out a plan for a bridge over the Orona v at Menzies’ Ford, strong enough to carry any road traffic, to cost about £266s.—Consideration was held over until next meeting. From the Valuer-General asking the Council to appoint a person to act on behalf of the Council on the Assessment Court. Referred to Chairman and Mr Wheeler, From Chief Surveyor, stating that he would look into the matter of the Ren Ren road on the return o£ the Commissioner. From Auckland Borough Council, re repeal of section 25 of Local Bodies Loans Act, 1908.—N0 action taken. " ' !

From O. Jepsson, claiming compensation for damage done to his gig caused by his horee taking fright at pipes on the road side.—The Council repudiated, any liability. From District, Traffic Manager, stating be was unable to reduce the freight on gravel consigned from Terrace End pit to Buunythorpe. From A. G. Carty, stating that he had notified Mr Campion’s solicitor that the Council would not be liable for any part of the cost of taking over Gieson’s road. REPORTS. The Engineer reported : —The work of widening the approach to Marshall’s.. bridge has been completed at a cost of about £l6. Contract No. 10 for the supply of.about 2800 yards of gravel on Makino road has been commenced, about 500 yards having been delivered. Contract No. 5 for regrading a small hill and gravelling Maokay’s Line, has been commenced and I expect the contractor to make a start at the gravelling early next week. Contract No. 9 for the supply of about 550 yards of gravel on the Watershed, Feilding-Ashhurst, and Ulysses roads has been commenced. Contract No. 2 for the supply of about 2000 yards of gravel on Grove road North and Contract No. 8 for the supply of about 1500 yards of gravel on Greenhow’s have been completed satisfactorily. I have inspected Pfaarazyn’s road as instructed and find that there are about 60 chains of road formed butj not gravelled and about 36 yards of road formed and only very lightly gravelled. I estimate that to gravel this road so as to connect with the gravelled portion of Spur road there will be required about 2100 yards of gravel at a cost of about 2s 6d per yard completed, making a total cost of about £l5O. The work of completing the formation of Kelvin-Grove road is proceeding satisfactorily. The roadman for No. 6 riding reports that the decking of a small bridge on the Feilding-Ashhurst road is in rather : a dangerous state and requires renewing. I would propose calling tenders for the remainder of the gravelling contracts. Several of the contractors now working will have completed their contracts. in about a fortnight.—The report was adopted and authority given to redeck the small bridge referred to. OTHER BUSINESS. It was resolved : That (Ors. Ylncent-Redmayne) tenders be invited for supply of all gravel authorised, and the acceptance of tenders be left to the Engineer and the Councillor for the riding interested. That (Ors. Rowling-Burrell) the Engineer be instructed to have the piece of land severed from Messrs Lloyd and Reid’s land, surveyed, and transferred toithe Council; also that piece taken from Mr Allerby to give Mr Jeffrey an outlet to the public road.

That (Ors. Rowling-Burrell) offer of Mr Allerby to sell a quarter of an acre for the purpose of road deviation at £35 be accepted, providing Mr Jeffrey guarantee the payment of the whole of the cost except cost of road formation. That (Ora Rowling-W. G. Pearce) a contribution of £3O be made to the Technical School for the purposfe of assisting in the establishment of. classes in country districts. Alteration of names on the rate roll were approved as follows: — From Q- S, Rumble to P. M. Maui, for 100 acres at Ashhurst; Andrew Fraser to Harriet Remnant, for section 38, Aorangi; E. D. MoOansted to I’. J. Lovelock, for 10 acres, lot R 7, sub-division of section 15; Ingram Bros, to Robert Fowell, for sections 17 and 18, Manchester block; Q. McYioar to R. J. Woodard, for section part 48, block 14, Oroua; Herdman & Martin to Eliza Jefferies, for section 53, sub-section 6, Manchester block; Edward Newman to Mark Sfcanish, for section 4, part 85, subdivision B, Manchester block; H. E. Maclean to N. J. Anderson, for section 3, block O, Man6hester block. Or. Pearce stated that Mr Palmer. Furlong’s road, desired some improvement to the ford near Mr Short’s property.—Or. Burrell r was requested to interview Mr Short with view of making a deviation of the road to the ford over his property.
