ACCIDENT AT MARTON.
RAILWAY PORTER INJURED. On Saturday night while the Main Trunk train; which leaves Marton at 7.25 p.m., but was delayed to connect with the Wanganui race train, was being shunted, William McGonagle, ;a railway porter, who was engaged in removing luggage from the van, fell between the cars and the platform. He was just getting into the van when a carriage bumped into it and threw him under the wheels. The train from Wanganui had just arrived as the accident occurred, and Guard Grant rendered first aid. stopping t the bleeding of the arm, which was almost severed abcve the elbow. The man’s head was also bandaged ;up and he was placed on a stretcher and removed to the van of the Palmerston train. He was removed to the hospital and his arm amputated at the shoulder, and at present is well as can be expected. He was for some years employed as gauger at Kakariki and had recently been acting as porter in charge at Rata.
