KITCHENER STREET CROSSING.

A deputation,-consisting of MessrsPurnell, Harris, Woolley, McHacdie and Brice, Representing Maiton. Junction residents, waited on the' chairman of Bangitikei County Gounoil yesterday afternoon to discuss proposals for some method of providing access to Kitchener Street. Mr Newman, M.P., was also present. An apology was given for the absence of Mr Collins,

Mr Purnell briefly set forth thevarious proposals and explained that , the meeting held recently had preferred the most expensive scheme, that to provide an overhead traffic bridge. The question of Jhow t©' - raise the money required was next discussed, and Mr Purnell suggested that a loan should be raised over a considerable area “ which would' benefit by the expenditure. The Chairman remarked that the difficulty was that if a large area was included the loan proposals would be lost. He asked whether it would be worth spending £IBOO on. the bridge when a level crossing could probably be obtained for £4OO and would only entail a detour of 15 chains. The Chairman pointed out that sis. members out of the nine on the Council came from the hack blocks and would be unwilling to spend the' rates on works at Marton Junction He also said that the Council’s borrowing powers were so limited that it might be difficult to get the money as a loan. It was generally agreed that the Government might well be expected to form the railway crossing if the offer to give land valued at probably £IOOO was not taken avail of. Mr Newman said that in his opinion if coat were not a consideration if the traffic bridge was the best scheme. He would bring the views of the /deputation before the Minister. He suggested that a small gate should be put in for foot passengers until the overhead foot bridge promised by the Minister bad been erected.

The meeting closed with an expression of thanks to the chairman for his presence.
