RONGOTEA SPORTS.
The annual Sports of the Rongotea District Athletic Olnb were held yesterday on Mr John Jarvis’ land. The gate receipts, £2l 17s, indicated that the attendance was larger than last year. Among the visitors Were Mr E. Newman, M.P., and Mr Aldwortb, of Silverhope. The latter was judge of horse events. Mr W. R. Walker, representing the Athletic Union, was present. The Sports meeting was managed to the satisfaction of all concerned, and the officers of the. Club, the [i committee, knd others that assisted, deserve the thanks of the Roneotea district for their efforts to promote good sport. The only event in which ladies competed was in nail-driving. Mrs Hansen succeeded in driving the nail by six blows and Miss Vile was second with 7 blows, as compared with 25 of one competitor. The prizes were a cruet stand, worth 80s, and a fruit dish, 15s. Fred Beckman won the chain-stepping by stepping the exact distance and he did so last year. Results: — Maiden Race, 150 yards.—F. Carroll 1. McCoy 2. There were nine starters. A good race.
