Mr J. E. Cull, a Christchurch engineer, who is the inventor of a process for concentrating and smelting iron sand, has been on a visit to Patea for the past week, investigating the deposits of iron sand there with the idea, states the Taranaki Herald, of establishing smelting works. Mr. Cull is thoroughly satisfied with the quality and quantity of the sand, and of the general suitability of Patea for the location of works. As a result of his visit, Mr Cull "submitted to the Patea Harbour Board on Tuesday an offer whiob included rental and a royalty per ton on the concentrated sand for a twenty-one years’ several sections near, tho Heads. Mr Cull expressed his willingness that the lease should stipulate for the expenditure of £IOOO during the second year of the term on works on the combined properties, and a guarautce of an output of 250 tons of iron and steel per year from the. combined properties.
