HUMANE SOCIETY AWARDS.

Per Press Association. Christchurch, February 6,

The Royal Humane Society met yesterday, A letter of commendation was awarded Alfred W. Paget for rescuing from drowning at Auckland on December 37th, 1907. Certificates were granted to John Prond (Auckland), William Jones (Napier), Constable Clark (Auckland), Constable W. R. Reynolds (Pioton), a framed certificate to Mrs Hararaka Temepara (Tolago Bay), for rescuing or attempting to rescue persons from drowning. Silver medals were awarded to William John Mnnro who rescued a man from a whirlpool in the Tauherinikau river on January 12tth, 1908; Douglas Hamilton, who rescued a woman from drowning in the roadstead [at Gisborne, being in great danger of being crushed between steamers in the open roadstead; Alfred E. Bates for attempting to rescue a man from drowning in a heavy sea at Gatlin’s bar on August 17th, 1908. A silver medal and framed certificate was awarded Reginald Tuck who saved a woman from drowning in a stream near Hamarana Springs at Rotorua. Tuck swam [underneath one of the horses which was stuck in the riyer as a result of a coach accident which precipitated the woman into the water, and ultimately saved one of the horses. Bronze medals : William Wallace for rescuing a boy ; from drowning at Hokitika; Fritz Ekman, for rescuing two boys and attempting to rescue a third from drowning at Kareka, Auckland ; H. H. Wauchop (Christchurch), for rescuing a number of persons from drowning at a life-saving competition at New Brighton on January 9th, 1908. Certificates: H. S. Williams (Christchurch) and V. J. Drake (Ohristohnroh) for bravery displayed on the same occasion.
