ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Press Association. Daunevirke, January 20. A sad drowning accident yesterday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two daughters of Mr Burke, butcher, occurred at Tiratu about four miles from Dannevirke. A picnic was being held at the locality when some children went into the river to bathe. Nancy Burke, aged eignt, got out of her depth ami Florence Burke, her sister, aged 15, in endeavouring to effect her rtscne was also carried away i.y the i.nirtur. both being drowned. Another sister, Dora, was rescued by Mrs Pettersen, who, herself, was nearly away by the heavy current. . One body was recovered last night and the remaining one this morning. Wellington, January 20.
An inquest was held at the hospital concerning the death of James Hen wood, an elderly patient, who expired suddenly while under the influence of chloroform and ether preparatory to an operation. The verdict was that death was due. to heart failure. Nelson, January 20. A very old resident of Marina named William Walsh, aged 70, was drowned at Caslan’s Ford, near Marina yesterday, being washed from his horse while attempting to cross after leaving Murcia on. The body lias not been recovered. Walsh was closely identified with the early mining days of Buller. and was a partner in the first spoon dredge at Fern Flat
