THE MARKETS.

AUCKLAND WOOL SALES.] BAD GET UP AND FALSE PACKING. In reporting on Wednesday’s Auckland wool sale the Herald says.— The market opened somewhat weakly, and it dragged very perceptibly in the coarser wools [[and in bellies and pieces, but there was good demand, up to a limit, for supreior lota of fine halfbred and fine crossbred, while good lambs’ wool sold very well. A good quantity of wool was passed in at owners’ reserves. Generally speaking, the reserves were too high. There was but very little purchasing for America, and consequently values went down. As a matter of fact, wool is selling in New Zealand at higher rates than in London, solely on account of the American buying, and it was the American baying that gave the firm tone to the November sale and to Southern sales. On Wednesday American buyers held off, except for some particularly choice lots of bright, fresh, well got-up wools, consequently values dropped. And the regrettable feature about the sale was that American buyers held off, not so much on account of having already filled orders, as on account of the bad get-up of some of the lots and the false packing detected in several instances. The woolgrower who neglects to “skirt” his fleece wools properly mixes good wool with inferior and coarser fleeces, and sometimes packs bellies and pieces in with the fleeces, is largely responsible for the diop in values on Wednesday, and consequently he has only himself to blame.
