THE SOUTHERN CROPS.

Per Press Association. Ashburton, January 6. During the past ten days the weather has been very moody in its character and unusually heavy rain has fallen intermittently, accompanied by cold winds. The grain crops are, therefore, being kept in a state of continual dampness and their ripening is considerably delayed. Rust is beginning to make its appearance in the oat crops on heavy lands and it warm, dry weatherjdoes not soon set in the position, which at the end of the year, was very bright, must assume a serious character for Light rain commenced to fall yesterday afternoon, and gained strentgh throughout the night, and is still falling steadily, with no immediate prospect of cessation. Harvest operations have been suspended for several days.
