FIRES.
Press Association. Auckland/’January 3. A fire occurred on Saturday night on board the Northern Company’s steamer Waimarie, which was lying The fire is supposed to have started in the galley, and with great rapidity spread to the pantry, and'saloos, all the fittings of which were destroyed, the interior of the vessel now presenting a very charred appearance. The engines or cargo were not damaged. Dannevrrke, January 3.
At about 6 p.m. on Saturday a fire occurred in Wylie and Oo.’s premises, occupied by J. J. Paterson, solicitor, R. G. Paterson and Company, land and estate agents and accountants, and Wylie and 00., grocers. The fire apparently started in the office of J. J. Paterson from some unknown causa, and obtained a firm hold in that portion of the building and spread to the upper storey. The brigade was promptly on the scene and quickly subdued the flames, although a gale was blowing and serious damage was anticipated. R. G. Paterson and 00. suffered by the water, Wylie and 00. lose about £2O through the same cause. The premises are in the estate of J. J. Paterson, bankrupt, 'and the business of Wylie.and 00. belongs to the estate. R. G. Paterson and 00,. have nothing to do with the bankruptcy beyond occupying the offices. The insurances are not available. Napier, January 3.
A telephone message from Wairoa states that a block of buildings there was totally destroyed by fire between 2 and half past 3 o’clock this -morning. The buildings destroyed were those occupied by. the East Ooast Mail Newspaper, the damage amounting to about £800; Chapman, draper, damage about £800; ; Broad and Tristram, chemists, damage not stated; and Holt, builder, damage about £IOOO. Nothing was saved, and the total damage is estimated at about £7OOO. There was a change of wind at about 3 o’clock, otherwise the destruction would have been much greater. (Wairoa is a township about as large as Marton, but has no fire brigade.) Blenheim, January 3.
A fire which broke out early this morning destroyed William Sowman' grocery store and all the stock therein. The account books were saved but in a charred condition. Mr Sowman, who owned the freehold, is a considerable loser. The insurance is £IOOO on the building in the State office, and £7OO on the stock in the Phoenix. , Christchurch, January 3.
An old wooden two-storey building. used as a Chinese laundry, was totally destroyed bylfire |this morning. The occupants, two Chinese, just got out in time. The building, owned by T. Dixon, was insured in the South British for £l5O.
