RACING FIXTURES, January 37 and 38 —Pahiatna R*C. Meeting.
RANGITIKEI R.O. SUMMER MEETING. Fine weather favoured the Rangitikei Racing Club for the opening day of its summer meeting. The attendance was above the average. Although the fields were not large, a splendid day’s sport resulted—a tribute to the haudicapper, Mr Ulic Shannon. Wth one exception, the Scott Memorial Handicap, favourites won, and it must have been a profitable day for a large number of investors. Speculation per medium of the machine was brisk, but the total fell short of £l2Bl compared with the opening day last year. The receipts amounted to £BIBB, as against £9464, Six bookmakers (4 inside and 2 outside), however, competed against the totalisator, and contributed £ll3 to the Club s revenue. The starting of Mr T. Cameron left little or no cause for complaint, all his despatches being uniformly even. The easy victories of the favourites made the judge’s duties a somewhat light task. Mr McKelvie always had bis decisions promptly hoisted. The secretarial work was again efficiently and courteously carried out by Mr H. A. Goodall. The other officials did everything possible to conduce to the pleasure of the poublio and to give satisfaction to horse-owners. An unfortunate incident occurred in the Railway Hack Hurdles, resulting in the disqualification of F. Whiter house, during pleasure. He rode Maidi in this race, and when about 100 yards from the winning post, crossed D’Nil. The judicial committee at once held an inouiry, and after due that Maidi be distanced, the stakes be awarded to D’Nil, and that F. Whitehouse he disqualified. This was unfortunate for the owner, Mr W. Shannon, because the Handsome Jack mare would probably have won without any interference.
