MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of above was held last evening. Preseut-Ors. Lyon (chair), Hilton, Gould, Sutcliffe and Bredin, . The resolution passed on May -40cn to make and levy a general rate ot 2s in the £, library rate of one penny and a special rate of tenpeuce for year 1908, on all rateable property, was confirmed. A letter from John 0. Meyer was received, complaining of gas fittings in one of his now houses in Marton. —Referred to gas manager to have matters complained of attended to. Marton Band wrote asking for free use of Opera House for concerts, prior to going to the next Band contest.—The Band proposed to give concerts free of charge.—The request was granted and dates to be arranged with custodian. The General Manager of New Zealand Railways wrote stating that the probable consumption of water at Marton Railway Junction, on completion of Main Trunk Railway, would be from 12,000 to 15,000 gallons dailv. The Department, however, hoped to obtain an artesian supply at Marton for its own use. EioC6iv6ci, The Manager of Bank of New Zealand wrote advising that Council’s application for limit of £4,800, had been approved, and that rate of interest had been increased by per cent., the rate now being 5 % per cent. . Marton Chamber of Commerce wrote asking Council to contribute a third cost (£ls 15s) towards planting cabbage trees (Wauaki) between the town and station on Wellington road and Station street.—The Rangitikei Oouutv Council is to be asked for a third and the Chamber was prepared to pay the balance. —Resolved, that in view of the fact that the footpaths in the streets mentioned not being formed, consideration of the proposed planting of trees be deferred. Or. Hilton applied on behalf of Marton Football Club for permission to remove hurdle fence on Western portionFof'Marton Park to the Eastern side—this was for the purpose of preventing spectators at football matches from trespassing on the playing area.—The request was granted.
