MARION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The usual monthly meeting of the Executive was held on Tuesday, Mr F. Purnell (president) in the chair. It was decided to co-operate with the Marton branch of the Farmers* Union in endeavouring to have a weighbridge installed at Marton station. The District Engineer wrote to the Chamber in reply that the work of erecting verandahs on both sides of Marton Station would be put in hand shortly. In reply to a complaint' as to the noxious quality of the gas supplied to the borough, the Town Clerk advised that when the new;pnrifier had been fixed the gas would be stored a sufficient time to pnrify itself. The Foxtou Chamber wrote, asking the Chamber to send a representative to a conference to be held at Palmerston on the 4th inst to endeavour to secure the constitution of a Harbour Board at Foxton. It was resolved that Messrs Purnell and Brice should arrange for the Chamber to he represented. The sub-committee appointed to consider the question of tree planting in the borough having presented its report, it was resolved to support a proposal to expend £ls 15s on planting cabbage trees on Wellington Road and Station street, one-third to be' contributed by the Chamber and the Borough and County Councils fto be asked to provide the balance. A committee was appointed to Obtain a specification and estimate of cost of, an-asphalt footpath to the Railway Station and 1 report to next meeting. It was resolved to write to the Postmaster-General and the member for the district pointing out that the importance of Marton as a postal centre and the increase of business and staff bad rendered the present building totally Inadequate, and asking for additional accommodation "by the erection of another storey on the present building.
