NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION
SOUTH ISLAND ANNUAL MEETING. Per Press Association. Dunedin, June 51 ' The annual . meeting of the . National Dairy Association {South Island) was he’d to-day. -- Mr Baron (Go'-e) moved that no second grade in aAs be placed on cheese tor export. Instances were quoted of cases where cheese, graded as second grade, had realised a higher price than first grade in the same shipment. Mr Singleton ex’pained that tne above fact was due r o the condition of the cheese at Home, owing to the faMing-oif in Britain’s imports of cheese "rom North America. 'There was a demand for meaty bodied cheese which would be carefulgone into when Mr Caddie returned vom England. At the request o' ! the meeting Mr Singleton on the state of the cheess at the time c? shipment He said ti’at the North Is’aud factorie* were very oa.e al, out -or the last six or seven years Lie South cheese did not present such a satisfactory appearance. The-e was too much handling to enable cheese to. go away at its best. M*' Scott, in endorsing Mr Singleton’s leraarks, said tiiat the methods of haudliug transhipments at Wellington w r ere quite oosolete, but the efforts of the shipping companies to get the Harbour Board to effect an improvement bad been •> ain. On the arrival of New Zealand shipments on occasions cheese which was broken down was given p' efc ence,_ whereas under normal conditions it would have been second quality. He strongly advised adherence to the present svstem. After Mr Singleton’s explanation the motion was withdrawn. It was decided to ask the Government to inquire into the question of the temperature of tne chambers carrying cheese lu the oceau steamers, and to [provide a thermograph, to be inspected before the vessel leaves New Zealand and read and recorded by the dairy expert at Home.
Mr Singleton said the question was unavailing. Mr James Milne was re-elected president.
