SHOOTING.
The annual match to dbcide which corps shall hold ;the handsome battalion shield for the ensuing year took place on the Palmerston North rifle range yesterday. Bight teams competed, and the match was fired under very auspicious conditions. The weather was beautiful with "the exception of a bright light - on the targets and a slight wind at the 600 yards range, which somewhat upset the riflemen. Wanganui Rifles, who were the second corps to win the shield, succeeded in achieving that honour again by .scoring the fine total of 900 points, which is- five points higher than any previous score for the shield. The finish was rather exciting. Wanganui Rifles were the last to finish, and with four shots they required to get 19 out of a possible 20 to (.win. They put.up the possible, the sfour shots being “bulls.” Palmerston Rifles were second with 898/1 The various teams’ scores were-: — . Wanganui Rifles ' ... 900. Palmerston North Rifles 898 ,■ Manchester Rifles .. 861 r Wanganui Guards .. 807 vv Highland Rifles 806 * Royal Raugitikei Rifles ‘779 Palmerston Guards .. 757 ' f Wanganui Irigsh Rifles 646.
