GENERAL NEWS.
The Arbitration Court was reported as having left Christchurch in haste last week in order to deal with, the Auckland Tramways strike. On'-the way, it must bo presumed that rumours of its superfluity reached the Court, for it has lingered a week in Wellington, considering matters more or less important, and now is announced as about to go to Westport. Had the Court gone to Auckland, it would have found, of course, another Court about to "take possession of its territory; and the interesting question which is the real King, or the true Pope, would have occurred again according to several historical precedents. The mock Court, as it is supported by the Government, appears to hold a stronger position than the official Court, which is supported only by the law. By retreating to Westport, therefore, the Arbitration Court may bo showing that discretion which is the more prudent part of valour. —Post. During a violent quarrel with her husband a , Paris woman named Duval threw a soda water syphon at him. It missed him, went through a window, dropped into a passing motor-cab, and exploded like} a bomb. Tho four occupants of the cab were cut about the face and hands, but their troubles were not yet over. Policemen in uniform and two detectives in plain clothes who happened to be passing made a rush at the cab and arrested tho people in it. Two of them proved to bo Russians, and they bad the greatest difficulty in convincing the magistrate before whom they were taken that they were not militant Anarchists. "They were kept in custody all night, and were only set free in the morning after the woman who had thrown the syphon had presented herself at tho police station and expressed her regret for her display of temper.
