WAIOTAPU PRISON CAMP.

Wellington, May 15. The Minister of Justice, in an interview to-day, said that the protest from Auckland against the class of prisoners sent to Waiotapu tree planting camp was based on a misconception. Men transferred to the Hot Lakes district are carefully selected and every care is taken that only prison «.s whose conduct in town gaols is good arfe sent to the camp. There has been no outcry from Rotorua district about the class of men sent to Waiotapu. The percentage of escapes has, he says, been remarkably small. The experiment has been a great success and he will not agree to the abolition of the system.
