ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Per Press Association.

Wellington, May 8,

The adjourned inquest into the circumstances of the death of Mr Joseph Petrie, Mayor of Greymouth, was concluded to-night. The evidence failed to prove upon what car the deceased was a passenger when he met with the accident, which resulted fatally. A woman passenger said the deceased had pulled the ball, indicating that he wished to alight, and the car slowed down, but did not stop. It then went faster, and Mr Petrie jumped out when the car was going five or six miles an hour. The deceased fell, and the motormau then stopped the car. He ran to where Mr Petrie lay, and took the names of some of the passengers. The City Council Solicitor said he had interrogated all the tramway men employed on that section at about the time of the accident, and none admitted any knowledge of the affair, and no accident had been reported. The jury decided that the deceased met his death accidentally by slipping from a moving car on the night of April 6th. Westport, May 9.

Ernest John Burke, aged about 35, formerly of Reefton was found in a dying condition in a stable yard and died shortly afterwards. The man’s face was badly out about and one eye destroyed. He may have been trampled upon by horses. Deceased was an excessive drinker.
