MARTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

SECOND EDITION.

The ordinary monthly meeting_ of the Council was held last evening, Mr Purnell (president) being in the chair.

Messrs A. H. Martin, Arthur Brow r n. S. J. and G. M. Davenport were elected members.

On the suggestion of Mr E. Newman, a committee was appointed to consider the best means of advertising the town. In regard to the complaints of delay in transhipping goods replies were received from the ; Wanganui Chamber that the delays arose from insufficient wharfage accommodation which the Wanganui Chamber was endeavouring to have remedied. From the Wellington Chamber that if a specific instance of delay was reported full inquiry would he made.

The sum of £3 3s was voted to the Technical School and Mr Collins was appointed to represent the Chamber at the Conference concerning technical education to be neld In Marton on the 33th inst. The form of contract for the trial bore for artesian water offered for tenders by the Railway Department, was read. A 3-inch pipe is to he sunk to a maximum depth of 500 feet with the right reserved to the Department to discontinue operations at any stage. It was resolved to appoint a committee to watch the progress of -the work and report, and to write to Mr Stevens, M.P., on the subject of railway workshop's. Another railway matter to be brought before the proper authorities is a verandah for the east side of the Marton station. It was also decided to endeavour to obtain direct telephonic communication with Wellington. The secretary was instructed to write to the committee appointed at Ohingait: to agitate for the opening for settlement of the Sandon Block offering to co-operate with Ohingaiti to secure that end.
