Mr Ernest Aves, writer on economics, testifying before the House of Commons’ Home Work Committee, said that though Wages Boards worked well in Australia fixing legal minimum wages, in British trades it presented formidable difficulties. In the event of a large increase of Australian immigration it would probably be impossible to maintain the present rate of wages. Speaking generally, the success of the Boards was due to the fact that their determinations were contingent upon protection. The tendency of determinations was to weaken the trade unions.
