BRITISH POLITICS.
BY-ELECTION
Press Association —Copyright. London, May 6.
The Wolverhampton East by-elec-tion resulted G. Thorne (Liberal) 4514; L. Amery (Unionist) 4506. At the general election the voting was: Sir Henry Fowler (L.) 5610; Mr Amery (O.) 3745. In the'House of Commons, Lieut.Colonel Seeley, in reply to a question, said that owing to the exceptional nature of the qualifications desirable, there was some difficulty in finding a suitable candidate for the post of British member of the Joint Court at the New Hebrides, but he hoped he .would be early selected. He added that the Court cannot commence its functions until the buildings are completed in the autumn. Received May 7, 8.23 a.m. London, May 6. In connection with the Wolverhampton election, of 1100 Catholic voters, the English Catholics voted for Amery, the Irish for Thorne. Tile Daily News (Liberal) says the result of the election is one of the severest blows for Government since the tide began to turn. The only explanation is that the tariff reform movement is a growing force. In the House of Commons Captain Sinclair’s Education (Scotland) Bill was read a second time without a division. THE PACIFIC CABLE. Colonel Seeley, replying to Mr Bellairs, estimated the loss on the Pacific cable for the current year at £69,000. The Imperial Government do not propose to consider relaying ■the line' in order to touch Honolulu, unless the colonial jjarfcners suggest this course.
