"Wellington, May 6. A burglar entered Mr J. 18. Teasdale’s premises, Brougham street, last night, at midnight. Mr Teasdale’s wife woke him, saying that there was a ’man in the room| She turned on an electric switch that was near her hand, and had a momentary glimpse of a retreating man, stoutly built. When Mr Teasdale opened his eyes he saw the door closing. He promptly jumped out of bed, and ran into the passage, switching on all the lights as he went, but not a sight nor sound of the intruder did he catch. The miscreant got safely away, but he had been disturbed soon enough to prevent him taking any valuables. At about 1.30 this morning, Mrs Mountjoy, residing in Austin street, near Breugham street, was awakened by a noise in her room, J|and saw a disappearing light reflected on the bedroom door. In the morning it was found that a gold watch and chain, four gold rings, and several gold brooches and pine, worth altogether about £25, were missing. Auckland, May 6,
The recent burglaries in Auckland would seem to indicate that a gang is at work.
On Tuesday night Mr Gerald Bell, a hatter, carrying on business in Karaugahape Road, had a sensational encounter with a man in his bedroom. He was awakened by the flashing of a bulls-eye lantern, and immediately grappled with a burglar. In a pocket book on the dressing table was £27 in notes, some gold in a coat pocket, and a quantity of silver in the vest. The man had taken the £27 in the pocketbook, and after an exciting struggle escaped through the window.
