Press Association. Dunedin, May 6. Claude McKewen, four years of age, while running across the tram line at Caversham, was knocked down by an approaching car and severely injured. A thigh was broken , a leg broken and lie had a severe scalp wound. Ashburton, May 6. A man named A. H. Penny, traveller for Messrs Duff and Go., soft goods merchants, Christchurch, was found dead in a bedroom of the Somerset Hotel to-day. It appears that he got a cup of hot %vater from the kitchen, engaged a room, and an hour later was found by one of the maids reclining on a bed quite dead. An empty phial found in one of his pockets and other indications all point to the case being one of suicide by poison. Wellington, May 6. The inquest concerning the death of Mr Josehp Petrie, Mayor of Gceymouth, which is supposed to have resulted from a tramcar accident on the night of April 6tb, has been further adjourned for inquiries to be made as to the particular car • which the deceased .was in, and the names of the motorman and conductor. Dunedin, May 6. The adjourned inquest on the body of the boy, Alexander Edgar McPhee, was resumed at 3 o’clock tbisjifternoon. ic was decided that it was unnecessary to take further evidence, the facts having been brought out at the Magisterial inquiry into the collision. The verdict was as follows:—“That deceased met his death by drowning in Otago harbour on April 18th through being thrown out of the oil launch Matakana, which came into collison with the steamship Lady Roberts, such collision being caused by the careless handling of the launch by her owner Joseph Coddoi, particularly so by his shifting the tiller at a critical moment, thus taking his boat right across the bows of the Roberts, and we really think him guilty of manslaughter.” Consequent 1 on the finding of the jury Joseph Coddoi was arrested this afternoon gon a charge of manslaughter. The accused was brought before the Court, and remanded for one week. Bail was allowed, the accused in his own recognisances of £IOO and two sureties of £SO each. Timaru, May 6. Mr O’Meara, of the Stock Department, attempted to commit suicide at Temuka this afternoon. In passing a shop he a knife from a sill, walked on a yard or two, and then gashed his throat in two or three places. Bystanders threw hmi down, took the knife from him, and rendered first aid. He was taken to a private hospital and the injuries, though serious, are not expected to be fatal. O’Meara, who is about to be transferred to Masterton, has been very depressed during the last few days. He was much liked at Temuka. Dunedin, May 7. Ling Wah died suddenly on Tuesday at North East Yalley. The verdict of the jury was that death was due to general exhaustion, 'combined with blood poisoning. Wellintgon, May 7. An inquest opened yesterday on the body of a three mouths old child of Edward and Amelia Peach, showed that the"iufant was put to bed in a go-cart at 11 p.m., and was found fdead at 8.40 a.m. next morning. The doctor’s evidence'indicated that the child had been neglected. The inquest was adjourned till Friday.
