The Premier’s conference waited all day vainly for Mr Deakin’s promised financial proposals, and it is believed that the Federal Government is nervous in presenting them, foxfear of a hostile reception.
The Conference resolved that the provision of lighthouses on the Australian and Tasmanian coasts is a matter of urgent and pressing neoesisty, and the Federal Government was asked to take definite action in the matter.
Received May 6, 9.23 a.m. Melbourne, May 6
Late last night Sir W. Lyne tabled the Commonwealth proposals for taking over the State debts. Provision was made in the scheme for the appointment oi a Council of Finance to administer the debt, raise new loans, and control the sinking fund. Sydney, May 6. The'Herald and Telegraph regard Sir W. Lyne’s scheme as impossible so far as New South Wales is concerned and likely to retard progress and the development of her resources.
