MINING ACCIDENT.

Per Press Association. Auckland, May 3

An inquest is proceeding at Mercer on the accident in the Union Collieries Mine, at Maramarua, in which Herbert Ferguson was killed. Evidence was given to the effect that when Quigg started work at 8.30 he did not consider the roof too good. He tested it with a bar and pronounced it just shelly, but the deputy manager, said he gathered from Onigg that the roof was practically safe.

Another miner stated that during three days he was working he had. seen coal falling at the glocality of tho accident, and fully expected there would be an accident because of the quantity of coal that fell af Car shots, but he did not consider the coal dangerous. These statements were pointed out to be irreconcilable, but witness said he would adhere to them.
