THE AMERICAN FLEET.

ADMIRAL EFANS’ ILLNESS,

Press? Association—Copyright. Received May 1, 9.35 a.m. Sydney, May 1. Arrived steamer Otterbnrn from Magdalena Bay, where she coaled the American fleet. The Captain states that Admiral Evans, who had been ailing ever since he left New York, became indisposed at Magdalena and under medical advice left the fleet with the intention of entering a sanatorium at San Francisco.

The senior officer Admiral Thomas assumed command and hoisted his flag on the Missouri. It is understood that Admiral Evans has relinquished command only temporarily, and is rejoining the fleet as soon as his health is restored. The crews had received news of the intended visit to Australia and New Zealand, which had caused much enthusiasm.
