CATHOLIC SOCIAL.

A UNIQUE SUCCESS

Oue of the most pleasaut gatherings ever held in Martou took place at the Drill Hall last evening when the Catholic Social iu aid of the bazaar to be held in September took place. The hall was full to overflowing, making dancing at times almost impossible. The interior w t hs most artistically decorated, reflecting great credit on the efforts of Messrs F. Oormack secretary, A. Hunt and W. Broom, and the floor had also undergone a thorough preparation by a host of willing workers. The music, as was to be expected from Mr Bert Crozier’s orchestra, was a treat both to the dancers and onlookers. The Rev. Father Molloy took the opportunity of thanking all who had assisted in bringing the social to suclr an unqualified success, especially mentioning the assistance rendered by other denominations. He thanked both local performers and those who had come from a distance. He spoke most eulogistically of the work done bv the secretary and expressed his indebtedness to the tradespeople of Martou who had so generously helped. He was exceedingly pleased to see so many young people iu attendance and in conclusion he Treturned his sincere thanks to the hardworking committee. At intervals during the evening sougs were sung by Mrs F. Drury (New Plymouth), Miss Kennedy (Wanganui), Miss Schlcricke (Marton Junction), and Mr J. Meek, all of which items were most acceptable. Mr D. Ingram, as was fully expected, delighted his hearers with a whistling solo "The Mocking Bird,” and to an imperative encore gave several bird imitations, which were very natural and tuneful. Another item of merit was the conjuring of Mr Michalick, who fairly mystified all with hia clever sleight of hand tricks. Dancing was carried on with much enthusiasm and the M’s. 0., Messrs A. Way and S. Hunt, had a busy time. The supper provided by the ladies of Marton was most tastefully laid out and a word of praise is due to Mrs J. Fitzpatrick and her bevy of assistants who worked so energetically. In this connection should also be mentioned Mrs E. M. Rodgers, who generously provided the whole of the crockery, etc. The financial result of the social exceeded all anticipations.
