TELEGRAPHIC CODES.
A REASSURING STATEMENT
Press Association —Copyright. Received April 23, 8.0 a.m. London, April 23
Mr Buxton, Postmaster-General in a letter in reply to the London Chamber of Commerce in reference to the International [Telergaphic Conference, declared that he had no intention of supporting any proposal for the withdrawal of privileges of those using codes or artificial words. No such proposal had been made, but he thought it only right to expect the public equally with code makers to co-operate in keeping the privilege within reasonable bounds and observing the spirit of the regulation. Hence it desirable that the condition regarding pronounciahility should he more clearly defined but the only intention is to adopt a generous interpretation owing to the bulk of existing codes.
